Travel Drawing. Home and Away

Drawing offers a particularly valuable way to explore how the experience of being in a new environment, and becoming a new version of yourself, is recorded, mediated, and interpreted.

Drawing from direct observation is a way of engaging with the world in a more intimate way. It helps us to connect ideas and experience and turns the act of looking into a non-passive, thoughtful adventure. In doing so, it deepens our awareness of the present moment. We begin to notice details that would otherwise go overlooked: the sunlight falling across a meadow, the posture of a passerby, the atmosphere and texture of a place. These observations are visual but they often carry emotional or sensory associations and ground us more fully in our surroundings.

Drawing encourages curiosity, patience, and a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the world. In this sense, drawing from direct observation is not only about creating images—it is a way of thinking, learning, and forming a richer relationship with the world around us.

Travel drawing is often subsumed under the broader concept of illustration, which obscures its specific possibilities as a medium capable of directly conveying aspects of the experience of observing, moving through, and dwelling in a new space.

A drawing isn't a photograph. A drawing takes more than a moment and will 'contain' information about how you were feeling, the sun on your back, the smell of an Italian restaurant, children laughing.

Drawing changes and enhances the experience of travel. It gives purpose and value to being on holiday. It promotes well-being, self-belief and confidence. As we map our experience through drawing it helps us to develop a deeper understanding of who we are in relation to location, place and ultimately, to home.

We are never the same on our return. By reflecting and contrasting similarities and differences, the physical and emotional experience of travelling has the potential to enable us to continue our creative journey through the medium of drawing once we are back in a familiar place,

We are familiar with the things we forget. We may even find ourselves becoming
a tourist at home, amidst the commonplace, through the act of looking and being truly present.
